Description

Zometa is in a group of drugs called bisphosphonates. The zoledronic acid in Zometa inhibits the release of calcium from bones. Zometa is also used to treat high levels of calcium caused by cancer. It is also able to treat multiple myeloma, or bone cancer that has spread from elswhere in the body.

Your doctor might recommend having a dental exam for preventative tooth and gum care before taking Zometa. This is important if you have cancer, if you are having chemotherapy or using steroids, of if you have poor dental health. Some patients using medicines similar to Zometa experience bone loss in the jaw. Call your doctor if you experience swelling, jaw pain, numbness, tooth loss, gum infection, or slow healing after injury or surgery on the gums. You are more likely to develop bone loss in the jaw (osteonecrosis) if you have cancer or if you have been treated with chemotherapy, radiation, or steroids. Zometa and Reclast Tell your doctor before you take Zometa if you have aspirin sensitive asthma, a thyroid or parathyroid disorder, malabsorbtion syndrome, a history of surgical removal or part of your intestine, bone cancer, or kidney disease.

Do not have any type of dental surgery while using Zometa. Zometa will increase your recovery time. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.

Patient Family Information  : Zometa is given as an injection. This injection is to be administered in a clinic or hospital. This medicine must be given slowly through an IV infusion and can take up to 15 minutes to complete. Zometa is sometimes given once per year. Follow your doctor’s instructions on using Zometa. Drink 2 or more glasses of water within hours before your injection in order to prevent dehyrdation. Your doctor might need you to take a calcium or vitamin D supplement while you are using Zometa. Your blood and kidney function will need to be tested on a regular basis to ensure that Zometa is working for you. Do not miss any scheduled appointments.

Do not take Zometa without telling your doctor if you have had an allergic reaction to zoledronic acid or similar medcines such as Fosamax, Didronel, Boniva, Aredia, Actonel, or Skelid. Do not use Zometa without telling your doctor if you are pregnant. Using Zometa while pregnant can cause harm to an unborn baby. Do not take Zometa if you are breastfeeding a baby. Do not take Zometa if you have already been treated with Reclast.

Sever Side Effects : Seek emergency medical helps if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. Call your doctor if you have any of these serious side effects: urinating less than usual

Less serious Zometa side effects include: cough, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, headache, tired feeling, mild joint or muscle pain, or redness or swelling at the injection site.
