Renvela is for patients with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis. Renvela reduces the amount of phosphorus in the blood. It is a phosphate binder that binds with phosphate in the digestive tract, decreasing the amount of phosphate absorbed into the body.
Store Renvela at room temperature. Store this medication in a tightly sealed container away from moisture, heat, and light. Do not store Renvela in the bathroom. Do not use Renvela after the expiration date.
Certain medical conditions interact with Renvela. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, or if you are planning on becoming pregnant while using Renvela. Renvela can pass through breast milk and harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby before taking this medication. Some medicines react with Renvela causing unwanted effects. Tell your doctor about any prescription and non prescription medications that you use. If you have difficulty swallowing or certain stomach or bowel problems, or if you have had a major stomach or bowel surgery, inform your doctor. This information could change the manner in which you use Renvela. Tell your doctor if you take medicines for irregular heartbeat, seizures, or thyroid problems. Taking ciprofloxacin and Renvela can decrease the effectiveness of the medications. Tell your doctor if you are using this medication.
Renvela can reduce the vitamin levels in your body. Ask your doctor about whether you should take vitamin supplements while using Renvela. Follow the diet program assigned to you by your health care provider in order to safely use Renvela. Lab tests will need to be performed while you use Renvela. Do not miss any scheduled appointments. These tests are to monitor and check your progress. Renvela should be used with extreme caution in children, under the consistent watch of a doctor.
Use Renvela as instructed by your doctor. Verify with the label on the medicine for exact instructions. Take Renvela with food by mouth. Swallow the medicine whole. Do not break, crush, or chew the tablet before swallowing. Renvela can bind with other medicines. Your doctor may want you to spread out your dosing schedules and take them one hour before or 3 hours after taking Renvela. Tell your doctor about all prescription and non-prescription medications that you use. Keep taking Renvela even if you feel well. If you miss a dose of Renvela, take the dose as soon as your remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing regimen.
Do not use this medication if you are allergic to any ingredient in Renvela or if you have low blood phosphate levels or a blockage of your bowels.
Seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, hives, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue. Call your doctor if you notice any serious side effect
Less serious side effects include: constipation, gas, indigestion, nausea, stomach pain, or vomiting.
