This medication is used to relieve psoriasis symptoms including redness, dryness, flaking, itching, and scaling.
Store at room temperature. Keep away from moisture and heat. When medicine is not in use, keep it tightly closed.
Before using Polytar products, inform your doctor if you are allergic to coal tar or any other drugs; if you are receiving ultraviolet radiation treatment for your psoriasis; or if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Polytar products do not cure psoriasis but will provide temporary relief to skin symptoms. Patients using Polytar products should avoid exposure to the sunlight or artificial UV rays such as tanning beds or sunlamps because Polytar products can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight leading to sunburn.
Read the directions on the prescription label. Do not take larger doses than prescribed by your doctor. Do not take this medication longer than recommended by your doctor. Take this medication as directed by your doctor. If you are prescribed with the Polytar ointment, cream, solution, or lotion, apply it to your skin according to the directions on the label. If you are prescribed with the Polytar soap, use the soap on affected areas instead of the regular soap. Using warm water, work up a lather by massaging the soap briskly onto your affected area. Rinse the area off and repeat. If you are prescribed with the Polytar shampoo, shake well before use. Use as much shampoo to create a rich lather, massage your scalp and then rinse thoroughly. After rinsing off your scalp, apply the shampoo a second time. Leave the Polytar shampoo on your scalp for 5 minutes and then rinse thoroughly. Do not use Polytar products if you are allergic to coal tar. Also, do not use Polytar on areas of the groin or rectal area; or large skin areas; or longer than advised by your doctor.
Severe: Hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using Polytar and call your doctor immediately if you experience severe stinging. Swelling, burning, or other irritation on the treated areas of your skin.
Common: Milk skin irritation or skin rash.
