Indication : Forteo (teriparatide) is a medication used to treat osteoporosis in patients with high risk of bone fracture. It is a man-made form of hormone that naturally exists in the body and it increases bone density preventing fractures.

Storage : Store all unopened vials, cartridges, or injection pens in the refrigerator within a carton up to 28 days. If not used within 28 days, discard the medication. Keep away from children and pets. Dispose the medication if it is past the expiration date. Do not open the packet until you are ready to use the medication. Vials that are “in-use” must be used within 28 days. Make sure the pen is recapped and refrigerated.

Precaution : Before taking Forteo (teriparatide), inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or breastfeeding; if you are taking prescription or over the counter medication, herbal preparation, or dietary supplements; if you have any allergies to drugs; if you have Paget’s disease or other bone disorders (besides osteoporosis), high levels of calcium or alkaline phosphatase in your blood; a condition called hyperparathyroidism; a bone disease other than osteoporosis; a history of bone cancer or radiation treatment involving your bones; or if you ever had kidney stones.

Warnings : When taking Forteo (teriparatide) you may experience side effects that will impair your thinking or reactions. Be very careful when operating a vehicle, any other machinery, or do anything that requires you to be awake or alert. Also, avoid smoking or drinking because it can reduce your bone mineral density.

Patient Family Information  : Read the directions on the prescription label. Do not take larger doses than prescribed by your doctor. Take this medication as directed on the label or by your pharmacist, doctor, or other healthcare provider. Do not self-inject if you do not fully understand or have been given specific instructions by a doctor or a nurse. Forteo (teriparatide) must be injected under the skin of the thigh or stomach. This medication should be thin, clear, and colorless, if you notice it has changed colors, became cloudy, or has particles in it, discard the medication and get a new prescription from your doctor. Each needle should only be used only once and properly discarded in a puncture proof container once it has been used. After injecting Forteo (teriparatide), you may feel dizzy or light-headed. Sit or lie down until you feel better. Before your medication runs out, refill your prescription to ensure you get the most benefit from Forteo (teriparatide).
