Description
Duragesic (Fentanyl) is a medication in a form of a skin patch. It is used to manage chronic pain in patients who needs continuous pain relief and cannot use less powerful pain medicines to manage the pain.
Store the Duragesic (Fentanyl) in its original foil pouch, at room temperature. Do not open the foil pouch unless you are ready to use it. Keep away from heat, moisture, children and pets.
Before taking Duragesic (Fentanyl), inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or breastfeeding; if you are taking prescription or over the counter medication, herbal preparation, or dietary supplements; if you have any allergies to drugs; if you have a heart rhythm disorder, liver disease, or kidney disease; if you have a breathing disorder such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); or a history of head injury or brain tumor.
When taking Duragesic (Fentanyl), avoid alcohol or other medications that make you sleepy including cold or pain medication, muscle relaxers, and depression or anxiety medication because it can cause extreme drowsiness or breathing problems. When you need to take an MRI test, the Duragesic (Fentanyl) patch may burn your skin, it is important to remove the patch when undergoing an MRI test.
Patient Family Information : Read the directions on the prescription label. Do not take larger doses than prescribed by your doctor. Take this medication as directed on the label or by your pharmacist, doctor, or other healthcare provider. Keep track of how many patches you have used and be aware if anyone in the household is using Duragesic (Fentanyl) patches improperly or without a prescription. If a child or pet have accidentally sucked on it or swallowed it, it can be fatal. Use clear water to wash the skin and allow the area to dry before applying the patch. Do not use oils, soaps, alcohol, lotions or any other chemicals on the skin where the patch will be applied because your skin can absorb more of the medication from the patch which can cause harmful effects. Put the patch on a flat, dry, hairless skin area of the back, chest, side, or outer side of the upper arm. If there is hair in the area, clip the hair short. Do not shave the area. Put the patch on the skin and press firmly with the palm for 30 second
Do not use Duragesic (Fentanyl) if your body does not tolerate with a similar opioid (narcotic) pain medicine such as morphine (Kadian, MS Contin, Oramorph, and others), oxycodone (Oxycontin), and hydromorphone (Dilaudid). While wearing the Duragesic (Fentanyl) skin patch, do not expose it to heat including hot tubs, sauna, heating pad, or heated water bed because it can increase the amount of drug you absorb into your skin causing harmful effects.
Sever Side Effects : Severe: Cold, clammy skin; weak, shallow breathing; pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding; or severe weakness, feeling light-headed or fainting.
Common: Muscle stiffness, back pain; increased sweating, urinating less than usual; nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, constipation, gas; itching, blistering, redness, or swelling where the patch was worn; or dizziness, drowsiness, anxiety, sleep problems (insomnia).
