This medication is a type of contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy. The Delfen Contraceptive Foam Applicater is used just before sexual intercourse or any genital contact begins. Once inserted into the vagina, it will damage and/or kill sperm in the vagina. As a result, sperm would not have been able to travel from the vagina to the uterus and fallopian tubes to fertilize an egg.

This medication should be stored at room temperature. Keep the medication away from heat and moisture.

Before using this medicine, tell your health care providers about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding; if you recently gave birth or had an abortion; if you have a history of toxic shock syndrome; allergies, irritations, or infections of the genitals; conditions or medical problems where it is important that pregnancy does not occur; sores on the gentials (sex organs); or irritation of the vagina.

When using only a vaginal spermicide, preventing pregnancy is much less effective than IUD, birth control, or spermicdes used together with another form of birth control including condoms, cervical caps, or diaphragms. Pregnancy occurs in 21 of 100 women in the first year of only spermicide use. When using spermicides, you or your partner may feel stinging, burning, warmth, itching, or other irritation of the skin, sex organs, anus or rectum. Try using a weaker strength of Delfen Contraceptive Foam Applicater or try a spermicide with different ingredients. If the symptoms continue after you have used other products, you may have an allergic reaction to the products or an infection. Contact your doctor immediately.

Patient Family Information  : Read the directions on the label. Apply or insert the Delfen Contraceptive Foam Applicater properly in the vagina. Based on the directions on the label, use the correct amount. Once applied or inserted, wait for a period of time as directed on the label before having intercourse. If intercourse does not begin within half an hour after Delfen Contraceptive Foam Applicater has been applied or inserted, read the label for further instructions on applying more spermicide. When using the Delfen Contraceptive Foam Applicater with condoms, cervical caps, or diaphragms, read the label on the Delfen Contraceptive Foam Applicater to ensure the product can be used with latex condoms, cervical caps or diaphragms. If the instructions do not indicate the safety of latex condoms, cervical caps, or diaphragms to be used with Delfen Contraceptive Foam Applicater, the spermicide may cause condoms to break and cervical caps and diaphragms to weaken and leak during intercourse. Also, any oil based product

Do not use the Delfen Contraceptive Foam Applicater if you have a history of toxic shock syndrome. If you have an allergic reaction to nonoxynol 9, octoxynol 9, or benzalkonium chloride, do not use the Delfen Contraceptive Foam Applicater without first talking to your doctor.

Sever Side Effects : (Male and Female) Irritation, skin rash, redness, or itching that does not go away or subside within a short period of time; (Female only) increased frequency of urination, pain on urination, pain in bladder or lower abdomen; cloudy or bloody urine; thick, white, or curd-like vaginal discharge (only when cervical caps or diaphragms are used); vaginal irritation, redness, rash, dryness, or whitish discharge.

Temporary vaginal discharge when creams, foams, and suppositories are used; vaginal dryness or odor.

Symptoms of toxic shock syndrome for cervical caps or diaphragms: confusion, chills, dizziness; fever; muscle aches, lightheadedness; unusual redness of the inside of the nose, mouth, throat, vagina, or inside of the eyelids; or sunburn-like skin rash that is followed by peeling of the skin.
