Description
Astelin is a medication used to prevent nasal allergy symptoms including itching, sneezing, runny nose. This medication works by blocking the chemical histamine from affecting your body. Astelin is available in eye drops and nasal spray.
Store at room temperature. Keep away from heat, moisture, children and pets. When the spray is not in use, keep the dust cover on with the spray bottle standing in upright position.
Before taking Astelin, inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding; are taking prescription or over the counter medication, herbal preparation, or dietary supplements; if you have any allergies to drugs; if you are currently taking any medications that will cause you to be sleepy including sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, narcotic pain medication, cold or allergy medication, or medication for seizures, anxiety, or depression.
Patients using Astelin should avoid driving or doing anything requiring you to be awake or alert because the medication may cause side effects that can impair your thinking or reactions. Also, avoid alcohol consumption because it will increase drowsiness and dizziness from the medication.
Patient Family Information : Read the directions on the prescription label. Do not take larger or more frequent doses than prescribed by your doctor. Take this medication as directed on the label or by your pharmacist, doctor, or other healthcare provider. If using the eyedropper, gently shake the bottle to be sure that the medicine is mixed. Tilt your head back and pull on your lower lid with your index finger. Position the dropper above your eye and release a drop into your eye. Close your eye and apply gentle pressure to the inside corner of your eye for about 1 minute to prevent the liquid from draining out. Do not touch the eye dropper to any surface, including your eye and hands. The dropper is sterile – if it becomes contaminated it could cause an eye infection. Keep the bottle properly capped. If using the nasal spray, you must prime the spray pump the first time using the spray by shaking the medication well and spraying 4 test sprays into the air away from your face until a fine mist appears. Do not use Astelin if you are allergic to azelastine.
Sever Side Effects : Severe: Fast or uneven heartbeats, bronchospasm symptoms including shortness of breath, wheezing, or tightness in chest.
Common: Nausea; headache; nosebleed; eye redness; weight gain; burning in your nose; dry mouth, sore throat; drowsiness or dizziness; a bitter taste in your mouth; cough, sneezing, runny nose, cold symptoms.
